The new energy transition law, signed at the end of last year, stipulates that 35% of the country’s energy — an estimated 28GW — must come from renewable sources by 2024, with the primary driver being annual clean-energy auctions.

The first of these will be held in April with as much as 3GW up for grabs. In addition, all electricity distribution companies, fossil-fuel generators and consumers with power needs equivalent to more than 3MW a year — so called “qualified consumers” — will have to buy 5% of their supply from clean-energy sources by 2018, through direct purchases or a new green certificate scheme.
