In a lease application handed in to the US government last month, AWE has scoped out a $1.65bn development across two sites on opposite sides of Hawaii’s most populous island, Oahu, in depths down to 1,000 metres.
Hawaii has the richest offshore wind resource of any of the US’s 50 states, with average speeds of more than eight metres per second, and roughly 650GW waiting to be harnessed, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
