Some 300MW of utility-side meter energy storage systems (ESS) were brought on line in the first half of 2016, a 20% jump since the end of last year.
Together with the rise in behind-the-meter capacity build in the US, Australia, the UK and Germany, this has prompted an upwards revision from IHS's previous 1.5GW forecast.
The growth of ESS-linked projects has put lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries "on the road to energy storage heaven", says IHS principal analyst Marianne Boust, reflected in the technology's share of the ESS market having expanded steadily from 20% in 2010 to 90% forecast for 2016.
