"NordLink will contribute to the [energy] supply security on both sides," German energy minister Sigmar Gabriel said.

"This link will make the exchange of renewable energies possible, in particular of hydroelectric and wind energy."

NordLink aims at using Norwegian hydro-electric reservoirs as energy storage for excess renewable energy from Germany that can be used during peak demand hours.

The green light came from Germany's Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency BSH, the agency for mining, energy and geology of the coastal German state of Lower Saxony, as well as from the Norwegian government.
