German boom helps wind outpace fossils in 2014 – EWEA

Germany and to a lesser extent the UK drove total new EU wind installations up 3.8% last year, but growth in some previously vibrant markets slowed on policy uncertainty, said the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA).

EU nations connected 11.8GW to the grid in 2014, to reach a total of 128.8GW – 8GW of that offshore, according to EWEA’s annual figures. That was more than the 5.6GW of new capacity added by the coal and gas industries combined.

New wind installations in 2014 exceeded 2013’s additions by 3.8%, and the source could now cover the equivalent of 10% of Europe’s power needs.
