Kipeto – sited 50km from the Kenyan capital Nairobi – will use 60 GE 1.7MW wind turbines under a $155m contract that also includes a 15-year service deal.
The wind farm will get $233m of debt finance from OPIC, the US government’s overseas development finance institution.
Kipeto has been under development by GE since 2010 in conjunction with local independent power producer (IPP) Craftskills, with the African Infrastructure Investment Managers and the International Finance Corporation also involved.
