The company bought the majority of Alstom’s global energy operations – including its onshore wind unit – in a $9.5bn deal, and formed joint ventures with the French group in areas including offshore wind and grids.
GE told journalists the reductions would be needed to “increase the competitiveness of the former Alstom businesses” and achieve synergies without giving further details.
Countries likely to see job cuts include France, the UK, Switzerland and Germany, it was reported.
