On 8 June, Belgian offshore specialist Geosea began driving 24 piles into the seabed some 45km off the coast of Borkum, an island jutting off northwestern Germany into the North Sea. Grouped into fours, the piles will support the ‘jacket-style’ foundations for six wind turbines made by Hamburg-based REpower, rated at 5 megawatts (MW) each.
Geosea, which is using a jack-up barge to drive the piles at the 60MW Alpha Ventus, previously worked on Belgium’s first offshore wind farm, Thornton Bank.
