The French group bought Spanish turbine manufacturer Ecotècnia in 2007, but the wind industry soon spun into crisis along with the wider global economy. In 2009, with the industry in the doldrums, Alfonso Faubel was made senior vice-president of the company’s wind business.
His experience in the automotive industry helped Alstom streamline its production and create economies of scale. The next move was to make a beeline for Brazil, announcing a nacelle and hub factory in 2010 and revealing that a tower factory will be built in the south of the country this year.
