Karl John, an industrial specialist in the cross-departmental offshore wind team at the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), says that unlike countries such as Norway and Japan, the UK still has many shallower zones where fixed structures remain the most economic solution.
“Even though there is a huge potential for floating wind off Scotland, someone still needs to make a novel leap in the technology to make the cost of large-scale floating wind really competitive in the UK,” he says.
