Sere – located in Western Cape province – is Eskom’s first large-scale renewable energy project as it shifts its profile from fossil fuels as part of South Africa’s push for clean power.
The 2.5bn rand ($225m) wind farm will use Siemens 2.3MW SWT-2.3-108 turbines supplied by the German group under a turnkey contract.
Eskom said the connection of the first 16MW to South Africa’s national grid keeps it on track for full commercial operation by the end of March 2015.
