Together with the Société d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel, the tower's operator, US energy firm Urban Green Energy International (UGE) has installed two turbines at the tower 120 metres above ground level.

The turbines are now producing 10,000kWh of power per year, which will be used to supply the commercial areas of the Eiffel Tower's first floor.

While the energy generated by the small vertical-axis turbines is relatively little, they do form part of the city of Paris Climate Plan as a way to reduce the city's ecological footprint, and no doubt a clear signal to the world ahead of the November Paris climate summit.
