The technology, trialled with compatriot XEMC-Darwind at the ECN test farm in Wieringermeer , uses a computer programme that adjusts the pitch of each of the blades in real-time response to changing load levels.

"This means that you can produce the same amount of energy with a lower load," states ECN project leader Stoyan Kanev.

"This makes it possible to design larger wind turbines with rotor blades that are more than 6 % longer and that can produce more energy."
