Seabed scanning by specialist contractor Fugro revealed the U-31, lost since January 1915, sitting 90km off Norfolk at a depth of 30 metres.

The remains of the U-31, which carried 35 crew, will be left undisturbed by any future wind-related construction after being declared a military grave site.

Iberdrola subsidiary ScottishPower is developing the East Anglia Zone in conjunction with partner utility Vattenfall, and is currently pressing ahead with the development area’s first project, the 714MW EA1 wind farm.

The European offshore wind industry has grown accustomed to dealing with seabed objects left behind by two major conflicts in the last century – often in the hazardous form of unexploded World War 2 Ordnance.
