The huge deficit – which reverses a €2.1bn profit in 2013 – came after Europe’s biggest utility booked impairment charges against its generation businesses in the UK, Sweden and Italy, and was within the range expected.
Like other utilities, E.ON has seen its old business model hammered by falling power prices, especially in its home market of Germany where renewables have priority access to the grid.
