Doubts fall on Japan wind grid plan

A group of companies led by telecoms giant SoftBank may scrap a long-running plan to expand the transmission grid in northern Japan, according to local media reports.

The Nikkei, Sankei Shimbun and Hokkaido Shimbun newspapers reported this week that SoftBank subsidiary SB Energy — as well as Marubeni, Mitsui & Co and utility Hokkaido Electric Power — are now talking to the regional authorities about whether to continue with the grid expansion plan, which was designed to spur the development of wind power on the island of Hokkaido.
