Hatched as part of the utility's Beacon project, the new technology uses dual-Doppler radar developed by SmartWind Technologies to "sweep" an area to produce high-resolution dynamic images of wind wake, power curve measurements and wind turbine loads.
"Contrary to standard measurement set-ups, such as a met-mast or a profiling lidar which provide measurements of the wind speed and direction at a single position, the dual-Doppler radars give us the ability to quickly scan the flow field in and around an entire wind farm with unprecedented range and resolution," states Beacon technical manager Nicolai Gayle Nygaard.
