The first phase of the facility, expected to become the world's biggest offshore wind farm, is set to have a capacity of 630 megawatts (MW).
It will be built in the Thames Estuary, around 20 kilometres off the coasts of Kent and Essex, and is scheduled to be in operation by 2012, in time to provide energy for the London Olympics.
