IRENA reckons that a 36% share of renewable energy by 2030 would deliver half the emissions reductions needed to keep the world within the two-degrees temperature rise seen as the minimum necessary, with energy efficiency able to make up the difference.

Adnan Amin, director general of IRENA, said: “With the energy sector accounting for some two-thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions, the decarbonisation of energy must be at the heart of any effort to keep global temperature rise below two degrees Celsius.”
