Commentators in Paris remained generally optimistic that the marathon talks would result in a meaningful deal, despite continued haggling over several key issues.
They include the perennial roadblocks of finance, the obligations on developed nations and arrangements for review.
The overrun was anticipated, and comes after talks that were the "most complicated, most difficult, but, most important for humanity" according to UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon.
