Chile sees solar lift-off as PV, wind soar to 1.2GW in 2014

Chile's combined PV and wind installed capacity almost quadrupled to about 1.2GW in 2014 – with solar transformed from bit-part-player to major power-generator – data from the government's renewable energy department (Cifes) showed.

By the end of December the Andean country registered 362MW of PV in operation, compared to just 6.7MW of online solar capacity at the beginning of the year.

Wind capacity ended 2014 with a total of 836MW, up from around 330MW at the end of December 2013.

The two technologies account for more than half of Chile's total installed renewables capacity of 2.2GW.
