Miguel Arias Canete told an EU conference that renewables will play a key role in the Energy Union strategy, a high-level attempt to integrate the energy markets of its 28 member states.
"With a sector employing more than one million people and a turnover of €130bn, renewables are now in the mainstream in Europe," Canete said.
The bloc has already agreed a target of at least a 27% share for renewables at EU-level by 2030.
