The new RET replaces the original goal of 41TWh, and was set after months of bitter wrangling that saw investment in large-scale renewables virtually grind to a halt as the industry waited for the outcome.

The Australian government triggered the review more than a year ago and originally wanted to slash the RET to as low as 26TWh.

The eventual 33TWh figure – which would see output roughly doubled from the current position – is a compromise by the ruling Coalition government with the opposition Labor party, which introduced the RET while in office and initially resisted anything below 35TWh.
