Those factors are falling profits from fossil-fuel generation; doubts about its capability to pay for nuclear decommissioning and the future storage of nuclear waste; and an increasing threat of being cut off from financing due to its massive assets in polluting coal and lignite.

Nine-monthly results published last month again made clear that a plunge in earnings from the German utility's large fossil-fuel fleet continues to be a drag on earnings (net income was down by 29%), while renewables were a bright spot, with earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation in that area jumping by 74%.
