BD enters 20-year RECs deal

Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) will purchase renewable energy credits for the next 20 years from the recently completed 75MW Steele Flats Wind Farm in Nebraska.

The deal with Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD), which is purchasing the power from the facility, enables BD to utilize 30MW of that generation to offset electricity use from its two manufacturing facilities in the state.

BD, a global medical technology company based in New Jersey, says the deal is an important milestone in its worldwide sustainability program. BD has already met four out of five of its 2015 sustainability goals including a target to source 25% of its global electricity use from renewable energy.

The agreement with NPPD will further increase BD’s global renewable energy consumption, now 35%. The wind farm was built by NextEra Energy Resources.

The deal is part of a growing trend by many US industrial companies to achieve sustainability targets with utility-scale wind power.
