The formal notice to proceed is a “major milestone and confirmation that this project … will now materialise”, says Yves Rannou, Alstom’s senior vice president for wind.
Alstom won the turbine contract for the 30MW Block Island project in February 2014. Siemens had been the presumed supplier since 2011, but ultimately failed to cement a deal.
Block Island appeared a relatively small fish compared to the nearby 468MW Cape Wind project, where Siemens is the turbine supplier.
