Adwen, a joint venture between Spanish OEM Gamesa and French power giant Areva, kept its key component contractors under a bushel until July, when it announced delivery of the machine’s record-setting 88.4 metres blades from Denmark’s LM.
The AD8-180 gearbox from Siemens-owned Winergy measures up to this scale. With an input torque of close to 10,000 kilonewton-meters (kNm) and a weight of 86 tonnes it is the largest wind turbine gearbox ever built.
