The funding, awarded under the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) programme, will underwrite development of a scale version of Accio's Aerovoltaic system, which uses electrohydrodynamics (EHD) to separate a mist of positively charged water droplets from seawater to generate high voltage electricity.

"We are thrilled to have the support of ARPA-E in taking the next big step in developing this advanced energy technology that can overcome the cost and siting hurdles limiting the harvest of abundant offshore wind," says Accio Energy chief executive Jennifer Baird.
