The $140m order will see the first converter station of its kind installed in Europe, as part of the 400MW interconnector which will use grid links to Denmark’s planned Kriegers Flak offshore wind project and Germany’s Baltic 1 and 2 plants.

The partly EU-financed project is designed to boost renewables integration and enhance energy trading.

Claudio Facchin, president of ABB’s Power Grids division said: “The integration of renewable energy and the development of interconnections are key elements of ABB’s Next Level Strategy, addressing the growing need for electricity with minimum environmental impact.”
