Amprion is in preparations to become the third transmission system operator (TSO) to offer offshore wind grid links in Germany – despite operating an 11,000km transmission system in western and southern parts of the country that have no direct access to the sea.

The TSO with a headquarters in North-Rhine Westphalia state has set up an offshore team, and plans to open an office in Hamburg to work on two grid connections with 900MW and 980MW capacity to link future North Sea wind arrays to Hanekenfähr in Lower Saxony, which is located some 120km south of the coast.
