French floating wind power pioneer Ideol has landed a €2.5m ($2.87m) grant from the European Commission to underpin plans to move its platform concept toward mass production for commercial-scale 500MW-plus wind farms.

The funding for the so-called Leadfloat project, awarded under the Horizon 2020 SME Instrument programme, will also be put toward assessing the wider economic development potential of the Ideol-led FloatGen prototype project brought online recently off the coast of France, optimisation of the technology’s operation and maintenance costs, and strengthening of commercial progress in strategic markets, including Japan.
