A proposal by European Commissioner for climate action and energy Miguel Arias Cañete to raise the EU’s target for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to 45% by 2030 instead of the 40% the block has aimed for so far has met a mixed reaction.

Cañete according to German news agency Dpa plans to submit the proposal to EU member states soon and hopes for a decision on the target at the next EU summit in October that takes places ahead of UN climate talks in Katowice, Poland, in December.
