The Indian government set 5GW and 30GW offshore wind targets after an initial expressions of interest process (EOI) attracted a roll-call of global industry players including sector leader Orsted, a clutch of European utilities, local groups ReNew Power and Suzlon, and oil majors Equinor and Shell.

The country’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said the “keen response” to the EOI for a first 1GW offshore project prompted it to adopt the 5GW goal for 2022 and 30GW by 2030 in a move designed to “give confidence” to the sector.
