Some describe it as a giant electrical ‘socket’ in the sea — and the multi-million-pound Wave Hub wave-power testing facility being developed off the west coast of England may well prove to be key to the UK keeping the lights on in years to come.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) calculates the country’s wave-energy resource could eventually be harnessed to flow around 50 terrawatt hours (TWh) into the national grid each year, but although many prototype designs are at the testing stage, no wave-power device has yet begun commercial operations off the UK.
