Most of this potential is located at United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) locks and dams facilities on the Ohio, Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas Rivers.
Investigators at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee identified more than 80,000 non-powered dams (NPDs) nationwide, analyzing 54,391 for which there was accurate geographic and flow information. They estimate that the top 100 NPDs could generate up to 8GW of reliable hydropower, with 81 of those Army Corps projects.
