The 1MW Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy (RITE) project will use the East River’s strong tidal currents to generate power.
Developer Verdant Power was granted a 10-year pilot project licence by the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) – the body’s first for a tidal energy scheme.
Verdant plans to deploy an array of up to 30 turbine generator units on the bed of the East River's east channel, using the licence period to carry out further operational and environmental impact tests.
