Thanks in large part to Scotland’s enthusiastic support for the technologies, the UK is by far the global leader in marine renewables, playing host to seven of the eight full-scale prototype devices installed around the world.
But in a new report, the UK parliament’s Energy and Climate Change Committee warns that a number of potential obstacles – chief among them the lack of clear support beyond 2017, when the Renewables Obligation (RO) is set to expire – could see the country repeat the mistake it made when it famously ceded its edge in wind-energy technology to Denmark several decades ago.
