The money comes as the government attempts to convince developers it remains open to new tidal technologies for harnessing the Severn, after having previously thrown its full weight behind just two technologies – tidal lagoons and barrages.
In late January the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) unveiled a shortlist of five development concepts for harnessing power from the Severn Estuary.
