Some of the technical challenges associated with ocean-current energy generation are: prevention of marine growth build-up; reliability (given the high maintenance costs of underwater systems); and resistance to corrosion.
The potential under the waves is huge
Ocean-current power systems, like those designed for tidal environments, harness the kinetic energy of marine currents. Unlike tidal power systems, no commercial grid-connected ocean-current turbine system is operating in anger. Yet there is great potential.
