With its main intake along the Allt a’Chonais river near the village of Achnasheen, the Chonais hydropower plant will power 3,000 homes.
Scotland has struggled to connect its vast potential for renewable energy with its primary electricity grid. But officials have increasingly come to support the idea of micro-renewable generation in areas of very low population density.
“New renewable energy developments, large and small, have a key role to play in Scotland’s economic recovery,” says Scottish energy minister Jim Mather.
