The 254MW Shihwa plant off South Korea's Western coast is slightly bigger than the 240MW tidal power station at Rance in France. It is seen as a step forward for tidal power, and could lead to further projects in the Asian country.
“Depending on the results of Shihwa, we can justify further development of tidal power,” says Keyyong Hong, director of marine structure and plant research at the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI).
