The 100-megawatt (MW) Glendoe power station, built into the hills above Loch Ness, began producing electricity in December 2008, and was officially inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth in June. SSE claims the scheme produces enough electricity to power 225,000 homes – or enough to meet the needs of Glasgow, Scotland’s most populous city.

“It is extremely disappointing that this problem should have arisen at Glendoe, when it appeared that the development of the scheme had been completely successful,” says SSE chief executive Ian Marchant.
