"You don't want unreliable things in the offshore environment, and if things are unreliable, people won't invest in them," says Seed. Wavegen expects to partner companies specialising in offshore engineering to take its technology to the next stage. For now, Siadar is about deploying on a full-scale commercial basis. "We need to move from focusing on reliability to focusing on efficiency and cost- effectiveness," says Seed.
Riding the wave of the future
Scotland's Siadar project will use technology known as an oscillating water column. Ocean waves will move air in and out of hollow concrete chambers in the 240-metre breakwater, which will drive turbines to generate electricity.
