HydroAysén, a joint venture between utilities Endesa Chile and Colbún, wants to build five hydropower stations, two on the Baker River and three on the Pascua, to produce an annual 18,400GWh.
Protestors want the government to block the development and focus on alternative renewable energy sources to meet looming power shortages in Chile, which has no oil or gas resources. Its economy is growing at 6% a year and needs an equivalent expansion in electricity generation.
