The 3,300-megawatt (MW) dam had been originally planned at a location 9km upstream on the Madeira river in the state of Rondônia. The ANEEL approval is conditional on the receipt of an environmental installation license from the Brazilian institute of the environment and natural and renewable resources (IBAMA), and permission of water usage by the national water agency.
IBAMA is reviewing the new dam plans, and it has recently fined the dam construction site for deforestation.
