The Pike study forecasts “robust” market growth from 760MW this year to 5.5GW in 2017.
It says output will be spurred by growth in the tidal-power industry where deployments should total some 2.4GW, led by top-producing countries South Korea (750MW), the UK (529MW) and Canada (300MW).
India, China and New Zealand are each predicted to add 200MW, and Australia 100MW.
“The next six years will see the launch of a number of ‘Phase 1’ early deployments that have the potential to be scaled up significantly toward the end of the decade,” says Pike Research analyst Dexter Gauntlett.
