The cash, granted through the country’s Marine Energy Deployment Fund, will go towards a $1.8m project on Stewart Island, which has a population of 400, being developed by Langlee and New Zealand’s Tangaroa Energy.

The first 50kW Langlee E1 – a floating, winged device that “laps up” horizontal wave motions to transform them into electricity, is planned for deployment off Stewart Island in 2013.
