The new-design wave energy converter has had four steel columns – which previously housed the machine’s power take-off (PTO) equipment – removed to cut the weight of the 50kW, 15 x 15-metre unit by 40%, with the PTO fitted within the generator module.
Manufacture of the device – a floating winged concept that “laps up” horizontal wave motions to transform them into energy – has been made cheaper by replacing its moulded corners with welded ones.
