Start-up firm Green-Tide Turbines (GTT) has spent the past year raising money and fine-tuning its concept via computational fluid dynamics and detailed engineering projects at Cambridge University and with the Cambridge Consultants firm.
At the same time it has been putting a string of working models through their paces in two-metre-per-second flows at a refurbished mill on the River Cam.
Now the company is in discussions with potential partners in Brazil and Greece to trial both small run-of-river machines and full-size versions for tidal waters.
