Workers at the 3.4GW dam in the Amazonian state of Rondônia set fire to buses and destroyed housing units protesting that wages were insufficient and working conditions were unacceptable.
Work at that site and at the site of the nearby Santo Antonio dam has been stopped since last week.
The hydropower plant is being built by Energia Sustentavel do Brasil, a consortium that includes France’s GDF Suez, Brazilian construction company Camargo Correa and state electricity utility Eletrobras.
